ChumSum Instant Messenger v0.0.0.2 PRE-ALPHA
The ChumSum buddy list and IMs in their own desktop window, with taskbar alerts when a message arrives. Released 2026-10-11.
Log in with your existing ChumSum account. The app opens the normal ChumSum sign-on page from https://chumsum.com; there is no separate account and the app never stores your password. No account yet? Create one first.

What works
- Sign on with your ChumSum account (email + password), buddy list, instant messages, profiles, feed: the same ChumSum you use in the browser.
- When the window is in the background or minimized and someone IMs you: the IM sound, a flashing taskbar button, an unread badge (where the desktop supports it) and a desktop notification. Only for messages sent to you, never for your own.
- Remembers its window size; only one copy runs at a time; links to other sites open in your normal browser.
What doesn't (yet)
- No automatic updates: come back to this page for new versions.
- Builds are not code-signed, so Windows and some antivirus tools warn about an unknown publisher.
- No macOS build, and no Windows installer yet (portable .exe and zip only).
- Google sign-in may be refused inside the app by Google; use email + password if that happens.
Install notes
- Windows (portable .exe): download and run it, nothing to install. If SmartScreen says "Windows protected your PC", click More info > Run anyway (the build is unsigned, so the publisher shows as unknown). The first start takes a few seconds while it unpacks.
- Windows (zip): unzip to a folder you keep (e.g. Documents) and run "ChumSum Instant Messenger.exe" (same SmartScreen steps). Starts faster than the portable .exe.
- On Windows the app adds a Start-menu shortcut "ChumSum Instant Messenger (PRE-ALPHA)" on first run; Windows needs it to show the app's notifications. To remove the app, delete the .exe or folder and that shortcut.
- Linux .deb (Ubuntu/Debian):
sudo apt install ./ChumSum-IM-*-linux-amd64.deb, then open "ChumSum Instant Messenger" from your apps. - Linux AppImage:
chmod +x ChumSum-IM-*.AppImageand run it. On Ubuntu 24.04+ AppImages may need--no-sandboxor the .deb instead (an Ubuntu AppArmor restriction).
